Traditional Song Week, realizes a dream of a comprehensive program completely devoted to traditional styles of singing. Unlike programs where singing takes a back seat to the instrumentalists, it is the entire focus of this week, which aims to help restore the power of songs within the larger traditional music scene. Here, finally, is a place where you can develop and grow in confidence about your singing, and have lots of fun with other folks devoted to their individual song journeys. Come gather with us to explore various traditional song genres under the guidance of experienced, top-notch instructors. When singers gather together, magical moments are bound to happen!
For our fourth year, Traditional Song Week is proud to present a gathering of highly influential singers and musicians who have remained devoted over the years to preserving and promoting traditional song. We welcome back this year, all the way from Scotland, Master Music Maker Fiona Ritchie, an international treasure and very special friend of the Gathering, who helped us kick off the program’s inaugural year. Community Gathering time each day will highlight a special presentation by Fiona, featuring tales from her years with The Thistle and Shamrock radio program as well as several LIVE interviews with our staff. We will also have a special visit from Grammy-award winner David Holt, host of public television’s Folkways. David and fiddler Josh Goforth will introduce us to singers from the Blue Ridge Mountains. Two-time IBMA Female Vocalist of the Year Laurie Lewis and partner Tom Rozum will present the Art of the Duet, a rare opportunity to learn from two of the leading singers of our day. The program will feature classes in bluegrass, American roots, blues, gospel, old-time country & honky-tonk, songs from Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, French Canadian and Cajun songs, songs in Irish and Scots Gaelic, North Carolina mountain ballads, music theory and ear training, songwriting in the tradition, shape-note singing, duet harmony, international choral songs, Carter Family songs and more. The week will also feature nightly concerts and singing sessions, the Old Farmers Ball dance, a honky-tonk jam and dance night, a children’s program, ample opportunities to mix with Fiddle Week participants and many occasions for community singing in various genres. Traditional Song Week runs concurrently with our Fiddle Week, and students may take classes in either program. You can view classes here as well as staff bios.
